The power of a young girl

Friday, 18 March, 2011 - 5:15 am

Dear Friends,

We are all still so angry at the atrocity in Itamar Israel, and the terrible news from Japan, that it is hard to focus on the joy of Purim, but we will have to, and that will come soon.

First I need to get it off my chest;

On Friday night, 12 year old Tamar Fogel came home to find her parents, Ruth and Udi Fogel, two brothers Yoav (11) and Elad (four), and her 3 month old sister Hadas murdered in their beds. They had had their throats cut and been stabbed through the heart.

Yesterday, I was really shocked. Toward the end of the Shivah (7day mourning period), 12 year old Tamar gave an interview to Israeli news channel 2 and said: "it's important for me to pass on a message to our Jewish nation..."

A girl, who just a week ago turned into an adult in a minute, is talking about belief, about the fact that nothing, no evil force will ever break us, and in her pure simple way is talking about Jewish pride and Jewish unity. My feelings tell me, this is a special soul.

I went through the thousands of comments to the interview online, and what can I tell you, knowing the situation in Israel and the politics, seeing such an outpour of love and such empathy on an Israeli news site is really not usual.

This girl stirred the whole country.

If we remember that we are talking about a girl, who a week ago was probably only thinking about what to dress up as on Purim, and where she is standing now... It's breaks the heart on the one hand, yet it also shows us once again the strength that we have within us.

Here is your opportunity to express your feelings:

Write to the Fogel Family - Share your condolences and mitzvah resolutions in their memory with the Fogel orphans:

All the messages that will be received  in our community, will be forwarded to Tamar Fogel befor Passover.

Purim is a time of celebration and joy, perhaps the happiest day in the Jewish Calendar. You are invited to celebrate with the community at our big, fat Greek Purim Party for young and old, on Sunday, March 20.

We can make every holiday more meaningful if we learn more about it. Have a look at our Purim Mega Site.

Shabbat Shalom and Purim Sameach to you and your family,

Rabbi Chaim
